Silkscreen printing is known with many names - screen printing, silk printing, serigraphy, serigraph printing but they all refer to the same printing technique where a mesh is used to transfer ink onto a substrate, except in areas made impermeable to the ink by a blocking stencil. Silkscreen printing is a very popular and economical method for creating large quantities of customized clothing such as t-shirts, sweatshirts, tank tops, tote bags, and many more garments.

Screen printing is one of the oldest and widely used processes in the Middle East and China. This technique takes its name from the material that gave it a reason to be silk.

Screen printing processes step by step:

  •  1. Design preparation: it all starts with an idea that ends up becoming a design, logo or text.  It should be sent us in a vector file, scaled to the right print size. Recommended design formats: PSD, eps, png, jpg.
  • 2. Printing transparent films: We will separate your design by colors and from each one we will print a transparent film. The film is used to create the screens.
  • 3. Screen exposing: positioning the film onto a coated screen and taping to secure it doesn’t move. Next position the screen onto the screen-printing exposure unit. Exposing time takes 2-10 minutes, depending on the exposure unit.
  • 4. Washing out screen: wash out it indoors away from UV lights. Use a power washer to spray both sides of the screen to remove the soft emulsion from the stencil. The burned part of the stencil will go away easily leaving the rest of the stencil coated with hard emulsion. Now the ink will pass through the area you want and be blocked by hard emulsion everywhere else. Let the screen dry in drying rack in your darkroom.
  • 5. Screen Registration: registration is the alignment of the screen image with the original art or ensuring each color in the separations line up correctly in relation to each other.
  • 6. Ink: properly prepare the ink, the quality of ink is crucial to the quality of the result produced. Try to use plastisol ink as it is easy to print rather than water-based ink
  • 7. Drying: Once the shirts have been removed from the palettes, they are placed on the belt of the conveyor dryer to cure the inks.
  • 8. Packaging and distribution: The t-shirts are ready to be placed in boxes and sent to the customers or prepare for local pick up.

How much screen printing costs?

This is the question asked by most of the customers when they call our customer service. Unfortunately, it is hard to answer this question before knowing the order details. There are a lot of factors impacting the price of screen printing. Here I am listing some of them:

Quantity
As the minimum required quantity is 15 pieces in screen printing, the quantity is one of the crucial factors to the price. Basically, the more you order, the less you pay for each custom t-shirt printing.

Materials
Another factor that can alter the final cost of a screen-printing job is the materials. This applies both to the fabrics or the inks. Using good quality inks and materials is one way to ensure the durability of screen printing, although it will simply increase the final cost. If you are looking for cheap and good t-shirts, we recommend Gildan 5000 t-shirts which is one of the most printed t-shirts in the printing industry. Other printing products are in the Catalogue menu.

Dimensions
As expected, the price of screen printing will increase if the print is large and will decrease if it is a small design. However, in some cases, a large print may be cheaper than a smaller print if the design does not require a large amount of ink if it consists of thin lines or marks and not complete drawings.

Color
Printing a full-color design is likely more expensive than printing only black and white or just one ink. Choosing a base color may save you money rather than choosing a specific color that requires color matching service.

Design
If you already have a design or you can design it yourself, the service will be cheaper as you don’t need a graphic designer to design it for you.  The last key factor to the price is the number of colors in the design as screen printing requires screen setups, which is most time taker work.
