What is DTG-Direct to Garment Printing?

Browse Products

DTG derives from the English "Direct to garment", it is called direct to garment, digital printing, direct printing, DTG printing but all mean printing directly on fabric.  Imagine a huge inkjet printer that prints on t-shirts and Hoodies instead of on paper. It uses the full CMYK color spectrum (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) which allows for less set-up time and lower costs compared to traditional printing methods. DTG printing is the most economical solution for projects that use many colors since the cost is the same whether it is one or a hundred different colors design! It is also perfect for smaller orders there are no restrictions when it comes to the choice of printing colors.

Advantage of DTG Printing

DTG printing shines in its efficiency for small orders and its rapid turnaround times, sidestepping the manual color separation and screen creation required by screen printing. This technology is not only ideal for personalized or small batch printing projects but is also recognized for its environmental benefits, utilizing water-based inks that are less harmful to the environment. These inks produce vibrant, high-resolution prints that are durable and retain their quality over time.

The evelotion of DTG printing

The technology behind DTG printers has advanced, offering a range from entry-level models to industrial-grade machines. This evolution caters to a variety of production needs, from hobbyists to large-scale operations. The choice of a DTG printer is crucial, as it affects the outcome of the printing process. These printers use water-based inks, which are preferred for their eco-friendliness and effectiveness on a variety of fabrics, including cotton and cotton blends.

The DTG Printing Process

The process of DTG printing is comprehensive, starting with the preparation of digital art files and followed by garment pretreatment. The actual printing and subsequent curing of the ink are critical to ensure the durability of the print. Pretreatment is a vital step that prepares the fabric to receive the ink, enhancing the quality and longevity of the print.

DTG Printing vs. Screen Printing

When comparing DTG to traditional screen printing, DTG offers superior results for short runs and detailed images, thanks to its precision and the ability to use a wide color palette. While screen printing may be more cost-effective for larger runs, DTG's digital nature allows for a level of detail and color variety that screen printing cannot match, making it ideal for custom, low-volume orders.

Choosing between DTG & Screen Printing

Project Size and Complexity: For small orders with complex, multi-colored designs, DTG printing offers precision and versatility. Screen printing is better suited for larger orders where the high setup costs can be amortized over a larger number of garments, reducing the cost per unit.

Color Requirements: If your design involves more than eight colors or requires photographic detail, DTG is the way to go. For simpler designs or when aiming for specific textures within the print, screen printing offers a unique aesthetic that DTG cannot replicate.

Budget Considerations: Initial costs are higher with screen printing due to the need for creating screens for each color. DTG printing, however, does not have this limitation and can be a more cost-effective option for designs requiring a wide color range, especially in smaller quantities.

Durability and Feel: Screen prints tend to offer a more textured feel and can provide greater durability, making them suitable for designs that are intended to last through heavy wear and numerous washes.

Recommended fabrics

Direct to Garment Printing can be printed on T-shirts, sweatshirts, tank tops, and tote bags that are at least 50% cotton. The more cotton, the better the print result.

An important detail to consider is that it cannot be printed on 100% polyester fabrics since the ink would bounce or fall off when washed (polyester garments are usually are printed by Sublimation printing). The normal thing is to print on 100% cotton fabrics, although now more and more we print on 100% organic or ecological cotton fabrics.
